Meet James!

It’s James’ birthday week, so what better than a post to get to know him? He is a vital and irreplaceable part of all that we do here at The Mill District. We asked James all about his life and his role in this industry.

James Thomson

Co-owner of The Mill District, where he is also: handy-man, plumber, electrician, landscaper, airbnb manager, + more.

Less known traits: owner and operator truck driver, musician, dog dad, sneaker head, wine connoisseur, the cool uncle.

Where did you grow up?

J: Lake Forest, Illinois and Pensacola, Florida.

How old were you when you bought The Mill?

J: 30!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

J: Play guitar, shoot guns, sail on Clear Lake with my father-in-law, bike ride, smoke meat on my Traeger.

What sets you apart from others in the industry?

J: I’m a jack of all trades. I can mow the lawn, build out our website, clean the airbnbs, be the DJ, I know plumbing and electrical trades, and I can (and have) even marry our couples!

What is your favorite piece of history on the property?

J: The Mill. I love all the history and engineering of how the grain was separated and stored. I love taking my friends on tours to the top of the grain mill. The very peak of the mill is 55 feet tall.

What is your favorite building on the property and why?

J: The Watermill— I love the men’s lounge in the basement. It’s fun to drink, play cards, play pool, and a lot of the items in the men’s lounge are from my garage in Indy!

What made you want to purchase The Mill?

J: Ummmm… Moving out of Indianapolis after Covid. I really enjoy the hospitality industry and all the fun projects there are to work on around the property.

What is your favorite part about your job here at TMD?

J: Meeting new guests every weekend! It is so fun to live where you work. I love the late nights once in a while with the couples on the dance floor. Sometimes I bring my guitar out if the guests are lucky.

The Mill District would not function the same way without him! The property has certainly been blessed by the talented hands that care for it. Happy birthday week, James!
