Sunroom Makeover

I don’t know about you, but I am seeing old homes making a massive comeback! More and more young people (and really all ages) are in love with the idea of buying an old home and making it their own.

Jourdan and James moved into their 1850 farmhouse on the property in 2021 when they purchased The Mill District. It’s refreshing to see a home as old as theirs in such immaculate condition.

Despite the fantastic condition of the house, The Thomsons knew they still had a laundry list of projects they wanted to complete. The trickiest part is staying true to the original historic design, while still giving the space a 21st century flare.

Summer 2023, Jourdan and James began the process of transforming the sunroom into a laundry room and office. Since this room is of considerable size, they were able to add a sitting area, as well.

Before starting this project, the sunroom had no climate control and served as a “catch-all” space. It connects by a glass door to the kitchen. The first change they made was removing the door that separated the two rooms and added a mini split for heat/air. Now, this room is a part of the house, rather than feeling separated. The best part is that they can enjoy it any time of the year!

The color of your walls can affect your mood more than you think. As fun as wood walls can be, the room just really needed to be brightened up. The Thomsons went with Alabaster from Sherwin Williams for the walls. The beautiful wood ceiling remains untouched. We love the way it adds some texture and earthiness, which compliments the white and vice versa. The flooring was pretty scratched, so they installed a luxury vinyl with a fun pattern. The rest of the house has original wood floors, so the sunroom was a great place to add some floor flair!

Jourdan loves having her home office in the sunroom. The desk faces the windows and makes for a beautiful view while working.

Plumbing and electrical had to be added, as well as a utility sink. The sink is perfect for doggie baths, but is also used for gardening, painting, and other projects. The Airbnbs require a lot of laundry, so they added two commercial Speed Queen washer and dryer units. Jourdan loves them!

Our Amish handyman custom built cabinets for extra linens for the rentals. Jourdan and James didn’t have coat closet on the main floor, which is almost a necessity if you live in the midwest. The tall cabinets are used for winter coats, boots, and cleaning supplies.

To the left, they added a seating area with furniture they already had. The faux tree brings some life and warmth to the space. It feels as cozy as it looks!

In front of the seating area is a gorgeous vintage dresser with a Samsung frame above. The wood really stands out against the black and white.

Frank and Murphy certainly enjoy all the windows.

The update has seemed to completely change the energy in this room, making it one of The Thomsons most favored in the entire farmhouse!
